DIY home server
Hey there! Today, I'm sharing how I turned an old computer into a powerful home server. Equipped with an Intel i5-6400 CPU, ASUS H110-I/M32CD4/DP_MB motherboard, 20GB RAM, Ubuntu Server 22.04, and 3 x 500GB HDDs in RAIDZ1. Because I like to game, I decided to run game servers for Minecraft, Ark, and 7 Days to Die. Let's explore the details.
The initial setup included a 4GB RAM stick, but I added a 16GB stick to bring it to 20GB. Despite the mix, the dual-channel support of the ASUS motherboard made it work seamlessly.
Choosing Ubuntu Server 22.04 for its reliability, and utilizing Docker for application management, I streamlined the setup. Additionally, I set up game servers for Minecraft, Ark, and 7 Days to Die to add a gaming element to the server.
The DIY journey had its challenges, but with everything in place, my home server is now a versatile hub, handling various tasks and serving as a gaming haven. This project showcases the potential of repurposing old hardware for a practical and enjoyable home setup.
